This Center is to operate for a period of three years and is multi-industries (focus WEEE and ELV) and multi-materials (focus plastics and metals). The point is to provide map of competencies in the field of Recycling in Europe, together with relevant and customer oriented services.
- Opportunity analysis in the field of impact modification of polypropylene recyclate for a major elastomer manufacturer. These materials are to be extracted from different end-of-life products streams and are to be re-incorporated in premium end use preferentially automotive applications.
- Polyurethane markets, waste streams generated, state of the recycling techniques, including mechanical and chemical recycling, for ADEME.
- Definition and analysis of end-of-life options open for recovering plastics from ELVs, in view of designing such automotive components for easier recycling, in cooperation with the French Federation of Plastics converters, and tier 1 automotive suppliers within its "EDIT" program.
- Initiation and co-ordination of a European Thematic Network “Eco-efficient Treatment of End of Life Vehicles with emphasis on Plastics” which is sponsored by the European Commission, Industrial and Materials Technologies Program, and which incorporated over 40 participants, most of the plastics industry, (individual firms, and APME), the automotive industry and the other stake holders, dismantlers, plastic recyclers, shredder, academic institutions.
Creation of a website plastics-in-elv.org
- Identifying and evaluating available technologies and applications, including understanding feed characterization for the direct recycling of polyolefin film waste for ADEME i.e. analysis of situations where bypassing regranulation, and direct operation from flakes to end-products or from densified material to end product is possible. Assessing potential for technology and know how transfer.
- Identifying and evaluating available mechanical recycling technologies and outlets, including understanding feed characterization for the direct recycling of PET bottle waste for ADEME. Assessing potential for technology and know how transfer.
- Support in constructing a collaborative research project on the use of tracers in polymers in order to facilitate identification of such polymers past their end of life for products made from such materials. This is a project proposal not yet approved.
- Participation in the framing of a Thematic Network on recycling, leading to the possible concept of virtual recycling institute sharing capabilitires.
- Situation analysis and the strategic recommendation for mixed plastics recycling for the French Federation of Plastics Converters.
- Auditing of plastic recycling projects supported by ADEME, a government body linked to the French Ministry of Environment. Highlight of key success factors, critical issues and risks to sustainability.
- Support in designing the protection strategy, monitoring right of practice and preparing patents protection for a recycling technology targeted at recovering plastics from shredder residues.
- Evaluation of Research Proposal for Recycling projects to be financed by the European Union.
- Formulation of the HDPE plastic bottle post consumer waste recycling strategy for the French Consortium for Plastic Valorization (VALORPLAST), understanding existing and evolving situations on a Europe wide basis.
- Evaluation of value of patents and associated know-how in the field of mixed plastics recycling technologies.
- Opportunity analysis for new plastic materials as an alternative to PVC
- Impact assessment of RTD projects dealing with recycling issues, supported by the European Union.
- Support in finding appropriate site for setting up a recycling PET bottle facility.
